Sevilla’s pursuit of Patrick Mercado is under scrutiny after the Independiente del Valle prospect suffered a serious ligament injury. An agreement with the club now appears to be contingent on the youngster passing an exhaustive medical, and a rise that had him in contention for the next World Cup has stalled.
According to La Colina De Nervion, Sevilla have not ruled out his arrival, although it cannot be taken for granted. Antonio Cordón said recently that the final decision will be taken in June, and it will depend on the player’s physical progress.
From Ecuador, Independiente del Valle general manager Luis Fernando Saritama is seeking consensus with Sevilla on the next steps in Mercado’s recovery plan.
Mercado’s emergence reflects Independiente del Valle’s prolific talent production, which has fed Europe’s elite. Moisés Caicedo and Kendry Páez were both recruited by Chelsea FC, while Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho are thriving at the top level after coming through the same academy.
Sixteen-year-old centre-back Deinner Ordóñez has a strategic agreement to join Chelsea FC in January 2028. Under-17 internationals Edwin and Holger Quintero have signed long-term deals to join Arsenal FC in August 2027, and winger Johan Martínez has a verbal preliminary agreement for a future switch to Newcastle United.
All of this underlines why Sevilla’s recruitment team have targeted Independiente del Valle. The coming months will show whether Patrick Mercado joins that golden export line to European football.
