Matías Almeyda has been sacked by Sevilla following a difficult spell in charge that left the club hovering just above the relegation zone in La Liga.

The Argentine coach, who returned to the Andalusian side last summer having previously represented the club as a player, departs after overseeing just 10 victories in 32 matches across all competitions. Sevilla’s form in 2026 proved particularly concerning, with only two wins since the turn of the year ultimately prompting the decision.

After 29 league fixtures, Sevilla sit 15th in the table and only three points clear of the bottom three, increasing pressure on the club’s hierarchy to act quickly as the season enters its decisive phase.

Almeyda arrived with strong expectations following spells in charge of River Plate, Banfield, Guadalajara, San Jose Earthquakes and AEK Athens, but was unable to generate consistent results in Seville.

Club officials are now expected to move quickly to appoint a successor as Sevilla look to steady their season and avoid being dragged deeper into the relegation battle
