The World Cup has begun, yet conversation has centred on Shakira’s opening ceremony performance at Estadio Azteca amid doubts over the singer’s identity.

According to Superdeporte, speculation swelled during the live show and on X, formerly Twitter, as users questioned whether the performer was Shakira or a double, particularly while she delivered 'Dai Dai' with Nigerian artist Burna Boy.

Uncertainty stemmed from her keeping dark sunglasses on for much of the set, while some said her movements and physique seemed unlike usual. Memes and jokes followed, and Shakira has not responded so far.

Backed by an all-female dance troupe, she wore a sleeveless yellow mesh bodysuit with a roll neck, long matching gloves and an asymmetric mini skirt of white, pink and yellow scarves. She paired futuristic shades with white platform sports shoes and yellow laces, her long wavy hair appearing slightly darker than in recent outings.

Her appearance was among the most anticipated moments of the ceremony. The track was billed as the World Cup anthem and has already become one of her major hits. The 2026 tournament is being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
