Luke Shaw has backed his manager Ruben Amorim's ruthless bid to stamp out Manchester United’s “toxic” culture  - and says senior players must lead from the front.

After United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham, Shaw admitted he questioned whether he or his teammates were good enough to play for the club. The fallout was sharp, with former captain Gary Neville among the critics.

Looking back, Shaw says his comments came in the heat of the moment, fuelled by the pain of missing out on Europe and a miserable 15th-place Premier League finish.

Since replacing Erik ten Hag in the dugout last season, Amorim has been single-minded in his quest to introduce stricter standards and inject greater professionalism into his squad - with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho cast out of the picture.

"It's not hard to see from the outside what it's been like," said Shaw.

"A lot of the time I've been here over the last few years it's been extremely negative.

"It can be quite toxic, the environment, it's not healthy at all..."

According to Shaw, now 30, the message from Amorim has been consistent: anything less than 100% won’t cut it.

"Ruben brings demands... if someone's doing 85-90%, it's not enough.

"I think, especially this year, if you're not doing the right things, you won't play."
