Southampton beat Middlesbrough 2-1 after extra time at St Mary's to win the Championship play-off semi-final 2-1 on aggregate.

Riley McGree put Boro in front in the fifth minute, steering in Callum Brittain's cross from a set piece.

On the stroke of half-time, Ross Stewart levelled with a close-range header in the first minute of first half stoppage time.

Before the interval, Daniel Peretz thwarted Dael Fry. Moments later, Sol Brynn denied Finn Azaz to keep Boro level.

With penalties looming, Charles decided it in the 26th minute of extra time, lashing in from range after Taylor Harwood-Bellis found him on the right.

Tommy Conway went off injured for Boro (73.), with Alan Browne introduced.

Saints finished with 59.5% possession and delivered 11 corners. Boro produced 19 attempts but forced only three saves.

Saints take the tie 2-1 on aggregate.
