Sheffield United have agreed a fee of up to £10 million for Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga.

Sheffield United have agreed a deal worth up to £10m with add-ons for Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga.

According to Sky Sports transfer reporter Luca Bendoni via X on Saturday, Sheffield United have agreed an initial fee of £7/8 million for former Spurs defender Tanganga, with the deal potentially reaching £10 million including add-ons.

Sheffield United are set to host Millwall in the Championship later today, with Tanganga now unlikely to feature amid news of his impending transfer.

Tanganga signed for Millwall on a permanent basis last summer following a successful loan spell, and looks set to become the club's second-most expensive sale of all time, behind Romain Esse to Crystal Palace last season.

Football League World exclusively revealed earlier this week that Sheffield United had turned their transfer attentions to Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga.

That came after reports emerged that Blades had lodged an £8m offer for Coventry City star Bobby Thomas, but it now appears which of those two players will be making the move to Bramall Lane this summer.

As revealed by Luca Bendoni via X, Sheffield United have agreed a deal with Millwall for Tanganga, which will see Blades cough up an initial fee of around £7/8m, potentially rising to £10m including add-ons.

The Blades have got off to the worst possible start to the season under new boss Ruben Selles, losing both of their Championship games so far heading into today's clash with Millwall, and being knocked out of the League Cup by Birmingham City.

Their opening day 4-1 defeat at home to Bristol City was particularly damning, with Rhys Norrington-Davies, who is usually a left-back, being substituted off just before the hour mark, having particularly struggled alongside Tyler Bindon.

Bindon joined the club this summer on loan from Nottingham Forest, with Selles having previously worked with the New Zealand international at Reading.

Elsewhere, Ben Godfrey has joined the club on loan from Italian side Atalanta, whilst Nils Zatterstrom has joined from Swedish side Malmö to add some much-needed depth to the Blades' defence.

Selles had previously criticised the club's transfer business, and the board appear to have listened to him, with Tanganga set to join the club in what could prove to be an exceptional deal for the Blades.

Japhet Tanganga deal is a statement of intent by Sheffield United

Tanganga, 26, was exceptional in his first permanent year at Millwall last season, winning the club's MSC Player of the Season crown, the Players' Player of the Season award and the Junior Lions Player of the Season trophy.

The former England youth international came through the youth ranks at Spurs, but struggled to ever nail down a consistent place in the squad.

He headed out on loan to Bundesliga side Augsburg for the first half of the 2023/24 season, but didn't play a single game, and he was then sent out on loan to the Lions for the second half of the campaign.

Having impressed at The Den, Tanganga joined the club on a free transfer following the expiry of his deal at Spurs, and has since gone from strength to strength.

So, whilst the Lions will be disappointed to see him leave, they will be receiving a substantial fee for a player they signed for nothing just 12 months ago.
