Gustavo Hamer and Josh Sargent were both widely expected to secure moves elsewhere

Sheffield United and Norwich City have definitely surprised the rest of the division as the summer transfer window closed on Monday.

Gustavo Hamer and Josh Sargent were both widely expected to secure moves to higher divisions after outstanding 24/25 campaigns.

The Brazilian-Dutch midfielder was named the division's Player of the Year after contributing to ten goals and eight assists, while American striker Sargent finished with 15 league goals.

So far this season, the latter has scored five goals in four league games - while Hamer netted a half-way line effort away at Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup.

Sheffield United surely expected Gustavo Hamer to depart Bramall Lane

The retention of Gus Hamer at Blades is probably the most shocking piece of business completed by any Championship club this summer.

The 28-year-old was universally regarded as the bestr player in the second-tier following his Player of the Year award, making his continued presence at Bramall Lane all the more surprising given the club's disastrous start to the new campaign.

Hamer had been courted by multiple clubs throughout the window, with FLW exclusively revealing that he was PSV's first-choice to replace Joey Veerman if Brentford signed the latter before the deadline.

The Bees reportedly had two bids rejected for Veerman, and their second offer was believed to be around the £25m mark. Like Hamer, Veerman also remains at his parent club.

Blades have endured a nightmare start to the new season, collecting zero points from their opening four league games - the only team to do so.

Manager Ruben Selles found his team rooted to the bottom of the Championship table before deadline day, which would've created the perfect storm for Hamer to kick up a fuss if he really wanted to leave.

Josh Sargent stays at Norwich City despite late push from Sunderland

In equally stunning fashion, Norwich City's success in keeping hold of Josh Sargent will have Championship defences terrified.

After a somewhat disappointing first season at Norfolk in the Premier League during 21/22, the American's subsequent three full seasons at the club have seen him score 50 goals in 109 appearances across all competitions.

Including his first season, his overall record would be 54 goals scored in 138 games - due to only scoring four in his debut season.

Newly-promoted Sunderland apparently explored a deadline-day move for Sargent, as per Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke.

This comes after Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett revealed the striker's prospective move to Wolfsburg, for a "broadly" agreed fee of £21m, collapsed due to the American not wanting to go back to the Bundesliga.

What made Sargent staying particularly surprising was the fact that the Canaries sold Borja Sainz to Porto - another one of last year's Championship stars - for £14.25m.

Manager Liam Manning did declare it would take "something unbelievable" for Sargent to leave, after the striker's double against Blackburn Rovers sealed a 2-0 win - and obviously the unbelievable offer never came.

"He's the best nine at the level for me. We're delighted to have him here long may that continue," Manning added.

For both Norwich and Sheffield United, keeping their star men around - until January at least - is perhaps the first step towards what they hope will be successful campaigns - although the Canaries look the more likley to push for promotion early on.
