Thompson was promoted to the position of Sheffield United head coach last summer after impressing within the club’s academy system. He previously enjoyed PGA Cup success with the South Yorkshire club’s Under-21 side. In his first year as a professional first team head coach, Thompson helped Sheffield United to remain competitive, although they finished the campaign bottom of the Barclays WSL2 table. The Blades were handed a reprieve from relegation in May following Blackburn Rovers’ decision to exit the professional game.

Sheffield United kicked-off the new Barclays WSL2 campaign under the interim management of dependable coach Luke Turner. The Blades have taken one point from their first four league matches and currently occupy 12th position in the table. Sheffield United did defeat Durham on penalties in the Subway Women’s League Cup.

Turner will remain in interim charge of first team affairs in the short-term. He will continue to prepare the team for Sunday’s Barclays WSL2 fixture against Ipswich Town at Bramall Lane.
