Sheffield United produced a determined defensive display to claim a hard-fought 1-1 draw away to Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon, despite playing the majority of the match with ten men.

Goalkeeper Adam Davies proved to be the Blades’ standout performer, repeatedly coming to their rescue as the hosts piled on the pressure in the early stages. Demarai Gray was denied twice by the United stopper, while Marvin Ducksch also saw a powerful effort kept out during a frantic spell.

Ducksch would go even closer moments later, twice rattling the crossbar. First he glanced a header against the woodwork before following up with a curling strike that left the frame of the goal shaking as Birmingham continued to threaten.

The match truly burst into life in controversial fashion on 23 minutes. Femi Seriki was harshly dismissed after bringing down Ibrahim Osman, despite Tyler Bindon appearing close enough to cover the danger. The referee took his time before eventually producing the red card, leaving United to play the majority of the game a man down.

From the resulting free-kick, Ducksch stepped up and curled a superb effort beyond the dive of Davies to give Birmingham the lead. United reshuffled immediately, with Ki-Jana Hoever introduced as Danny Ings made way following the sending-off.

Just five minutes later the drama continued as United were awarded a penalty in bizarre circumstances. Former Blade Jack Robinson, who had only been cautioned earlier, handled the ball while attempting to take a goal kick despite the ball never having gone out of play. After a lengthy delay, Sydie Peck stepped up from the spot, but James Beadle guessed correctly to make an excellent save.

United would find their equaliser just before the break. Patrick Bamford showed excellent composure to bring down a long ball from Harrison Burrows at full stretch, rounding the goalkeeper before slotting home from a narrow angle.

The second half saw Birmingham continue to threaten. As the hour mark approached, Ducksch glanced another header against the woodwork, continuing a frustrating afternoon for the forward despite his earlier goal.

With the clock ticking down, the German striker struck the frame of the goal for a third time with a dangerous free-kick that had Davies beaten, the ball crashing back off the woodwork once again as United held firm.

Chris Wilder Praises “Pride” & “Resilience” As Blades Battle to Earn A Point

Blades boss Chris Wilder hailed his side’s efforts after the final whistle, describing the point as “well deserved and huge” in the circumstances.

Speaking about Seriki’s dismissal, Wilder said to SUTV:

“A ridiculous refereeing decision. I don’t know how he can gamble on it, and it is a gamble. Tyler is two yards away, the pace of the ball is going through to Adam Davies and it’s going left. If he’s not sure he can’t make that decision.”

Despite recent disappointing results, Wilder praised the character his players showed.

“My chat to the players this morning, the detail, the process and the tactical part of it is all important but sometimes it comes down to pride, resilience, togetherness, character, personality, belief and bravery. The players were rewarded with a result because they showed all those qualities.”

Reflecting on playing with ten men for over an hour, he added, “The shape of the team was really good. We restricted them to long-range efforts. We had to frustrate them and try to take a little bit of control back, and we were brave enough to do that. For me it’s a deserved point.”

Wilder also admitted the penalty incident was unlike anything he had seen before.

“Never been involved in anything like that before, especially with the people involved as well.”

Sheffield United now move onto 50 points but ten points behind the play-off spots with just eight games remaining.
