Sheffield United made it consecutive 3-0 victories as they swept aside ten-man Portsmouth at Bramall Lane on Wednesday evening.
From the opening whistle, the Blades imposed themselves with relentless pressure, penning Pompey deep inside their own half and dictating the tempo throughout.
United’s bright start forced Portsmouth into survival mode, and the breakthrough arrived via a set-piece. Japhet Tanganga rose highest to meet a corner with a powerful header that was destined for the net until Terry Devlin instinctively handled the ball on the line. The referee pointed straight to the spot and dismissed the Pompey defender, leaving the visitors a man down with over an hour still to play.
New arrival Patrick Bamford, who joined the Blades earlier this month on a short-term deal, initially collected the ball with the intention of taking the penalty. But in a selfless gesture, he handed responsibility to Sydie Peck. The young midfielder calmly slotted the spot-kick into the bottom corner, securing his first-ever goal for the club and giving United a deserved lead.
United came out for the second half with even greater intensity. Their pressure was rewarded nine minutes after the restart when Bamford reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box from a corner, stabbing home his first goal in front of the Kop to double the advantage and underline his bright start to life in South Yorkshire.
The striker made way shortly after, departing on 63 minutes to a warm ovation as Gustavo Hamer entered the fray for just his second appearance since returning from a knee injury. Ten minutes after coming on, he drifted in from the left and curled a spectacular strike into the top corner from outside the area.
This marks the first time since the 2018/19 season that the Blades have managed to win back-to-back games by 3-0 or more.

Manager Chris Wilder was full of praise for his side after another dominant performance and clean sheet, particularly on a night when both Peck and Bamford netted their first goals for the club.
“I thought the players were really good, a lot of boxes ticked,” Wilder said to SUTV. “It was another step forward and another test passed. It isn’t always easy playing against ten men, but I told the players not to get bored of just doing the right things.”
The Blades boss highlighted the significance of Peck’s milestone moment:
“Sydie was down to take it, we have an order, and he was really confident, just as he was last season. I’m delighted he’s got off the mark because he’s been close before, and you could hear what the supporters thought. It’s been a tough gig for that boy… but we’ve seen what he’s about, and it’s a good combination with Jairo in there.”
Wilder also praised Bamford’s impact and Tom Cannon’s reception from the home crowd:
“We’ve got threats at the top of the pitch… The ovation and applause Tom Cannon received was outstanding from our supporters and I mentioned it to him as he was coming off, ‘just have a little look around, everyone appreciates when you play like that and you’re positive and on the front foot’.”
He added: “A lot of people would be having a peek at us after the emphatic win on Sunday. I thought we looked a decent team tonight.”
With the victory, Sheffield United climbed out of the bottom three and will look to continue their resurgence when they travel to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.
