Sheffield United are already laying the groundwork for what promises to be a vital summer, and one name emerging on their radar is Lewis Dobbin.

According to The Star, the Aston Villa forward, currently on loan at Preston North End, features on the Blades’ long list of left-wing targets ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Dobbin offered a timely reminder of his qualities last weekend at Bramall Lane, playing a key role as Preston edged Sheffield United 3-2. His performance caused persistent problems for the Blades’ backline, adding a ninth goal to his campaign and only strengthened the case for his potential arrival in S2.

Chris Wilder Warns of “Big Summer” For Sheffield United

After the game, speaking to SUTV, manager Chris Wilder did not hold back in his assessment of his side’s defensive standards:

“Going from the fifth best defence in Europe last year to what we are now; absolutely nowhere near that from an attitude point of view or a technical point of view. There’s loads to work on [in the summer].”

Wilder also made it clear that significant changes are on the horizon: “Big summer ahead of us; a lot of hard work to get the right players in, get players out, and to go again. We certainly won’t be in this position next year, absolutely 100%. This time next year we won’t be in this position 100%.”

What Could Lewis Dobbin Add to the Blades?

One of the players who could form part of that rebuild is Dobbin. The 23-year-old has enjoyed an impressive loan spell in Lancashire, registering nine goals and eight assists.

Dobbin’s profile fits the kind of forward Sheffield United have often found difficult to find. He brings explosive pace and a direct running style, making him particularly dangerous in transition. When given space, he has the acceleration to burst beyond defenders and turn defence into attack in seconds.

Comfortable operating from the left, Dobbin relishes one-on-one situations. Averaging over 1.1 successful dribbles per game, he consistently looks to isolate full-backs and create openings either for himself or teammates arriving into the box. That willingness to take risks in wide areas and produce consistent quality is something Sheffield United have lacked at times this season.

Beyond his attacking output, Dobbin’s work rate stands out. He presses aggressively from the front and contributes defensively, averaging around 3.5 ball recoveries per game. That blend of energy and discipline aligns closely with Wilder’s demands.

Sheffield United’s Potential Attacking Picture Next Season

Of course, the Blades are not short of young attacking talent. Ryan Oné has just played a key role in Lincoln City’s promotion to the Championship, netting five goals in 15 appearances, showcasing a similar ability to operate both centrally and from the left. Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford has impressed since arriving in late 2025, adding experience and a reliable goal threat to the squad, bagging 12 goals in 27 appearances.

Even so, Dobbin’s specific attributes; his explosiveness, directness, and work rate would add a different dimension to Sheffield United’s attack. With a “big summer” looming, as Wilder puts it, identifying players who can immediately impact both performance and mentality will be crucial, and acquiring a talent like Dobbin would certainly fit that criteria.
