The Blades' prized asset continues to attract transfer interest heading into the summer
Sheffield United's 2025/26 season was one of extremely mixed fortunes, and those associated with the Bramall Lane club will be hoping for much more consistency on the pitch next season as a result.
Indeed, Chris Wilder is currently in the process of preparing for the first full season of his third managerial spell in charge of the Blades, having returned to his boyhood club last September following the disastrous start the club endured in the Championship under Ruben Selles, who lasted just six games in charge across all competitions.
After a mid-table finish in the second tier last time out, it is likely to be expected that the Steel City outfit will mount a much more sustained bid for the play-off places in 2026/27, especially after the expansion of the post-season lottery from four to six teams.
Wilder has been around the Championship long enough to understand what profile of players will be required if his side are to be successful on that front, and the 58-year-old has already made a number of key decisions in the off-season.
The likes of Jairo Riedewald and Danny Ings were released at the end of the previous season, whilst it has been claimed that the United boss is targeting experienced figures as part of his latest squad reshuffle.
Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City has been heavily linked with a return to S2, whilst on the other hand, the club's main creative spark, Gustavo Hamer, continues to generate discourse over a move away from Bramall Lane, and yet another update has dropped concerning the 29-year-old.

It has been well-documented just how much of an impact Hamer has made in this part of South Yorkshire since his £15m switch from Coventry City three summers ago following United's most recent promotion to the Premier League under Paul Heckingbottom.
Despite the club's immediate relegation back to the EFL, the Dutch-Brazilian's performances were a beacon of light, and after withstanding a barrage of transfer interest, the Blades saw their playmaker win the Championship's Player of the Season award in 2024/25.
Even though the team lacked consistency right throughout last season, that, again, could not be said for Hamer, who recorded five goals and 13 assists in 37 Championship games, with further interest in his services reported with just 12 months left on his contract.
Süper Lig outfit, Trabzonspor, were heavily linked with a move for his signature in January, and, as per a report from Turkish outlet, Fotomac, the side who finished third in the division last season have renewed their interest as a result of the midfielder's current situation at United, and that a formal offer is expected to follow in the coming days.

It has previously been suggested that part of United's transfer strategy was to add further depth out wide to accommodate Hamer in his natural '10' role, which would hint at a potential stay for the playmaker, although, unsurprisingly, speculation has also remained rife.
In the final weeks of last season, Wilder was heavily asked about the situations of his star performer and forward, Tyrese Campbell, who both offer extensive Championship experience, but are yet to be tied down to new contracts.
“If the player wants to go, but there’s no interest in them, then he’s here for next season. It’s an obvious one that we don’t like players running down their contracts, especially when the club paid quite a bit of money for Gus as well," he said.
There is, of course, a long way to go in the summer window, and there is no guarantee that Trabzonspor's expected bid will be accepted at the first time of asking.
However, it would also be of very little surprise to many if the Turkish club's interest started a potential bidding war which could prove tough for United to withstand, especially if, next January, they were to leave themselves vulnerable to losing Hamer's services on a free transfer through a pre-contract agreement.
