Sheffield United have confirmed changes behind the scenes ahead of pre-season

Sheffield United endured a difficult Championship campaign as they fell into the bottom half of the table.

The Blades earned their place in the play-off final in 2025, but their form over the last 12 months led to them finishing 13th in 2026.

Chris Wilder’s side were 13 points adrift of Hull City in sixth, who went on to earn promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.

The Yorkshire outfit will be looking to get back to a competitive level next season, with their sights set on competing for a place in the Premier League.

The play-offs will expand to include the top eight from 2027, which gives the club even more reason to think they can contend for promotion.

But first they must oversee the summer transfer window, which could prove quite a busy period for the Championship side.

Sheffield United have confirmed that Timothy Ryan has joined the club’s board of directors as they reshuffle behind the scenes.

COH Sports have re-named to 1919 Partners LLC, with Steven Rosen, Helmy Eltoukhy and Stephen Bettis also on the board.

Rosen has been the front-facing figure behind the relatively new Sheffield United owners, who took over in December 2024.

The American has reaffirmed their commitment to investing in the first team squad, with the transfer window now open.

He believes the best way to bring the club forward is to spend money bringing in fresh faces to improve Wilder’s side.

"As custodians of Sheffield United, our commitment to the club, its supporters and its long-term success remains absolute," said Rosen, via the club's official website.

“We have invested significantly in the club and will continue to do so.

"Success on the pitch is closely linked to continued investment in the playing squad and the quality of players a club is able to attract and retain.

“As custodians, the club and its supporters will always come first.

"At the same time, we recognise that to compete at the highest levels of the game, clubs must continually evolve.

“The ownership group needs to be structured in a way that allows us to expand.

“The 1919 ownership platform enables us to attract additional investors, bringing greater resources, broader expertise and enhanced capability to support our long-term ambitions both on and off the pitch.

"This next phase strengthens the club further and ensures Sheffield United is even better positioned for sustained growth, on-pitch success and long-term achievement."

How Sheffield United fans feel about ownership changes

Fans are split on how to feel about these changes, with some hopeful that they will be positive, and can help bring the club forward.

However, others are far more concerned with the Blades’ ability to spend, and they want reassurances that there will be money available to spend this summer.

With the transfer window open, some supporters only have one thing on their mind and that is for Sheffield United to add players to the squad quickly.

But some are sceptical of Rosen’s update, claiming that this highlights their own lack of money and that further investment needed to come in from elsewhere.

Sheffield United have until 1 September to complete any transfer business before the market shuts.

Sheffield United changes could mark the beginning of summer spending

Sheffield United have been linked with a couple of deals so far this summer, but it’s been relatively quiet and nothing has been confirmed.

But these changes, along with the players coming back for pre-season soon, should mark the beginning of their plans for the transfer market.

Wilder will be hoping that this does lead to more backing from the owners, who will want to prove some doubters wrong after how disastrously things went 12 months ago.

Not only did they change manager only to bring Wilder back in September, but they clearly weakened the team by selling stars that they failed to adequately replace, such as Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic.
