Sheffield United could be set to pounce after Hull City were hit with a transfer embargo, meaning they're unable to complete a £3.5m permanent swoop for Aston Villa prodigy Louie Barry.

After setting League One alight in the first half of last season at Stockport County, the former FC Barcelona man was recalled by the Premier League outfit, as they sought a Championship loan for him.

The Tigers were the lucky ones to land the winger's signature, but he only played for his new club four times before a season-ending injury cut the loan spell to an abrupt end.

Despite this, Hull were set to bring Barry back to the KCOM Stadium on a permanent deal this summer, reported to be worth around £3.5m. However, their recent transfer embargo means that this deal is now off.

Sheffield United, who are now under the stewardship of former Tigers boss Ruben Selles, could now reignite their interest in Barry, according to reports by TEAMtalk, and the 22-year-old could be in line for a move to Bramall Lane instead.

Sheffield United urged to capitalise after Louie Barry, Hull City transfer collapses

In the wake of the news that the Blades could reignite their interest in the Aston Villa starlet, Football League World spoke to their resident Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy from the Blades Ramble Podcast, asking him what he thought of this potential deal.

Jimmy told FLW: "Louie Barry would be a great signing for Sheffield United.

"I think he's ripped it up in the league below last season. We are in desperate need of wingers. I think if we were to buy him it's a low-risk fee. I appreciate there might be a high sell-on clause.

"He has had his injury concerns, which is obviously always a worry. You never know what type of player he's going to come back as, but, I think for that sort of fee, it's low-risk for Sheffield United.

"I think the potential upside is very high, whereas the potential for it to fail as a transfer [isn't very high]. We're not losing too much money and there will still be some resale value in him I believe.

"So I think it's an absolute no-brainer for Sheffield United to get involved in this one, and the fact that he's worked with Selles before is very promising.

"I'm hoping there are some legs to this one, because I think he'd be a great addition," Jimmy concluded.

Injury issues the only concern for Sheffield United with Louie Barry

As Jimmy mentioned in his interview, the 22-year-old has suffered multiple injury setbacks in his career, which have ultimately hindered his development, and potentially stopped him from breaking through at Villa Park.

After an electric start to life at Stockport in League Two, Barry suffered a hamstring injury, which saw him miss a big chunk of County's promotion-winning campaign.

The same thing unfortunately happened last term as well, but this prevented him from having a well-deserved shot at the Championship in the second-half of last season.

Sheffield United can only hope that if they splash the cash to sign Barry, he remains fit throughout the upcoming campaign, and continues to prove himself as a reliable outlet for goals down the left flank.
