Becky Langley's side went behind to Sheffield United Women in the 71st minute through an unfortunate Charlotte Wardlaw own goal as her backpass went underneath Claudia Moan's foot.
Newcastle refused to give up, though, and in the first minute of second-half added time, they got their reward when Furness scored her first goal for the club.
A recycled cross from Lois Joel allowed the Northern Ireland international to head goalwards and despite the best efforts of the Sheffield United players, it nestled into the far corner.
United almost got off to the perfect start after six minutes when Jasmine McQuade slipped in Katie Barker, who saw her cross fall to the feet of her provider, but a double block stopped a certain goal for McQuade.
The Blades looked to respond to Newcastle's early pressure when Satara Murray found herself unmarked in the six-yard box, but despite meeting the ball first, she fired her header well over.
Newcastle's top scorer, Shania Hayles, worked a small amount of space inside the box after pinning her defender from a throw-in, but keeper Sian Rogers smartly palmed away her half-volley on the turn.
After a quieter 20 minutes, a Barker cross was only cleared to the edge of the area, but the ball never sat up for McQuade who looped her strike behind for a goal kick.
Despite Newcastle enjoying the majority of possession in the first half it was Sheffield United who went closest five minutes from half time. A mazy solo run from Maria Farrugia allowed her space to shoot from outside the area, but she could only watch on as it cannoned back off the bar.
Two minutes later, debutant Wardlaw got herself in the way of another Farrugia shot - a sweeping effort from inside the area.
Sheffield United started the second half as they ended the first with an audacious strike from Farrugia, this time on the volley, which required a stunning diving save from Moan to tip her effort behind.
McQuade almost put United in front when a defensive mix-up at the back saw a loose ball fall to Newcastle's number 21, but with Rogers out of her goal, Issy Hobson blocked the goalbound effort.
As the game entered the final 20 minutes, Newcastle began to increase the pressure. A lovely cross from substitute Poppy Pritchard was met by Hayles, who flicked her effort goalbound, but the home side had enough bodies back to take the sting out of the strike.
Just moments later, Sheffield United found themselves in front in the most fortuitous way; a back pass from Wardlaw squirmed under Moan's foot and rolled into the back of the net.
Newcastle should've pulled themselves back level when Sheffield United failed to clear a delivery into the box. United recycled the ball, and with two players attacking it, it dropped way wide of Rogers' goal.
Seconds later Newcastle almost finally beat Rogers when a Furness header ricocheted off Hannah Greenwood, but the Blades shot-stopper got down well to tip it around the post.
However, in the 91st minute, substitute Furness rose highest at the back post and her header looped over everyone and into the net.
