FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit shares how much they think the club should demand for Pierce Charles this summer

Sheffield Wednesday's nightmare season is almost over, with a new era on the horizon at Hillsborough, which, hopefully for Owls supporters, is a much more enjoyable one than in recent years.

It hasn't been a season for many of those involved with Sheffield Wednesday will be keen to remember.

The campaign began with Dejphon Chansiri's ownership of the club coming into serious question, not that it hadn't exactly been previously, with the Thai businessman's actions leading to the Owls suffering serious financial troubles.

Though entering administration meant the club was finally rid of him, financial troubles have persisted, with a new buyer of the club yet to be confirmed.

There are few silver linings to this season, though one potential good thing has been the performances of young goalkeeper Pierce Charles, with his exploits in goal as of late hotting up summer interest in the Northern Ireland international, as Wednesday look to maximise their profits on the shot-stopper.

Sheffield Wednesday must drive up the price for the in-demand Pierce Charles ahead of a potential summer departure

It's set to be a busy summer in South Yorkshire, with Sheffield Wednesday likely seeing a big turnover in their playing squad when they embark on their League One journey.

There is much uncertainty revolving around most of the members of the squad, but what is almost certain is the fact that Charles likely won't be around to join the Owls in the third tier.

Numerous Premier League sides, as well as Coventry City, have taken an interest in the Northern Irishman, as Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick, shares their thoughts on Charles' current situation, and how much the club should realistically demand for him.

Patrick said, "Yes, in recent weeks, Pierce Charles has really shown his potential, and that performance against Leicester was absolutely outstanding, and it's one of the best goalkeeping performances I've seen at Hillsborough.

"Some of the saves he made that day were outrageous, and the fact that his shot-stopping really stood out that day shows that that part of his game has progressed. Not that it was good before, but originally, what stood out in his game was his unreal distribution, but that shot-stopping display, and he was also very confident from crosses, which shows that there is real potential here with Pierce Charles to go on to play at the top level.

"So, in the summer, I think it's good that we will have proper owners in place to understand business, and we'll know that if we are to sell him, we need to try and get as much as we can.

"Everyone knows that players go into football for daft prices, so we might as well stick our arm in and try to get as much as we can. So even if we're starting with something like £5 million with add-ons, we need to start with that mentality and not be in the position where we lose him for peanuts because I do think that he will go on to have a very good career in the game."

Henrik Pedersen will be reluctant to see Pierce Charles leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer, but his sale could be necessary to fund a rebuild

It's clear that Charles is one of Wednesday's few saleable assets heading into the summer, and whilst head coach Henrik Pedersen would likely love to keep the Northern Irishman at the club, there is very little he can do to prevent the sale.

With numerous Premier League clubs lurking, even if Wednesday didn't have financial troubles and remained in the Championship, they would face an uphill task of keeping him around.

Preparing the squad for the trials and tribulations of League One will be their biggest priority heading into the summer, and to fund this rebuild, Charles' sale may be a necessary evil.

What sort of fee the club will collect for the 20-year-old remains to be seen, as even though he has just 12 months remaining on his current terms with Wednesday, interest in him this summer will be rife, and they will look to drive up his price by any means necessary.
