Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to try and sign departing Peterborough United midfielder Archie Collins.

Sheffield Wednesday are heading down to League One after a tumultuous couple of years whereby they are now finally coming out of the fog.

Last summer, Sheffield Wednesday were placed into administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri with key players, such as Michael Smith and Josh Windass, among those to leave the club due to a breach of their contracts.

Danny Rohl departed and was replaced by his assistant coach Henrik Pedersen and The Owls struggled throughout the campaign, failing to ever be competitive after their points deductions.

A final day victory against West Bromwich Albion did put them on to zero points and that parity was celebrated alongside the confirmation that no further points deduction would be inflicted upon them in the third-tier.

As they now rebuild under new ownership, they are expected to be among the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window and they may well seek to find value in the free agent market.

As they prepare for life in League One, Sheffield Wednesday will need something of a major rebuild and one man that they have been urged to look at is Archie Collins.

As acknowledged by FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday Fan Pundit Patrick McKenna, there may not be too many players within the free agent market jumping out to clubs but one player he believes Wednesday should be looking at bringing in is Collins, who is set to leave Peterborough United this month.

Patrick says: “Looking at the free agent list, it is pretty poor with not much choice and some players over the hill.

“The one that does stand out is Archie Collins and I am really surprised that he is a free agent.

“He’s a very good player. He’s versatile and is he a good age at 26, so I think, not just Wednesday but a few Championship clubs may be looking at him as well.

“I just don’t get why Peterborough are letting him go. They say they are trying new things but this is a quality player and his versatility is key and he would be very useful in trying to build a new squad so if we could get him then I would be delighted.

“Unfortunately, he may end up going to the Championship this summer.”

Archie Collins would be a coup for Sheffield Wednesday

Having lost the likes of Kwame Poku and Ricky-Jade Jones at the end of their contracts last summer, Peterborough are not opting to allow Archie Collins to depart, too.

The former Exeter City midfielder is widely regarded as a very good League One player, capable of playing in defensive midfield, primarily, as well as being able to push on further forward.

The 26-year-old played the most minutes of any Peterborough player last season, playing 404 more minutes than the next highest, goalkeeper Alex Bass.

He also led the way for Posh for assists (7) and expected assists with 4.9, 0.5 more than New Zealand international Matthew Garbett, and excelled in the defensive side of the game, too, with only Carl Johnston managing more interceptions per 90 and only David Okagbue making more blocks per 90.

Something of an all-action midfielder but more in the mould of someone to build around from the base of midfield, Collins would appear to be a very good signing for any ambitious League One side this summer and he would represent something of a coup should Wednesday indeed attempt to and eventually succeed in trying to sign him.
