Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has taken to social media to share his reaction to the news that defender Liam Cooper has been voted as the club's Player of the Month.

A new era is underway at Wednesday after David Storch's Arise Capital Partners completed their takeover earlier this year, and it has been an impressive start to life back in League One on the pitch.

After bringing in a total of 18 signings during the summer, many expected Wednesday's new-look side to take some time to gel, but they are among the early front-runners in League One.

The Owls currently sit second in the table, one point behind leaders Bradford City, and while they were not in action due to international call-ups, it was still a positive weekend for Henrik Pedersen's side as many of the sides below them failed to win on Saturday.

Pedersen came in for plenty of criticism after Wednesday recorded back-to-back goalless draws at home to Wigan Athletic and Stockport County prior to the international break, but the six goals they have conceded is the joint-second fewest in the division, with only Bradford boasting a better defensive record.

The Owls conceded just two goals during their league games in September, so it was little surprise that one of their defenders was voted Player of the Month, with Cooper picking up the accolade.

Cooper initially joined Wednesday on a short-term deal in November to help add some extra depth to their threadbare squad, but despite struggling with injury at times last season, he signed a one-year extension at Hillsborough this summer.

The 35-year-old was named on the bench for the Owls' opening day victory at Leyton Orient, but he has established himself in the team in recent weeks, starting each of the last six league games, during which his side have collected 11 points out of a possible 18.

Cooper has certainly made a big impression for Wednesday this season, and he was recognised for his performances as he was named Player of the Month by The Wednesday Word, a publication run by respected journalist Joe Crann.

News of Cooper's award did not go unnoticed by his Owls team-mate Barry Bannan, who took to Instagram to share his congratulations with the defender, writing: "Go on son", accompanied by three clapping emojis.

Wednesday are back in action on 6th October when they host Sunderland U21s in the EFL Trophy, and their next league fixture is against fellow promotion hopefuls Huddersfield Town at the Accu Stadium on 10th October.

Cooper made just 14 appearances for Wednesday last season after joining the club in November, and some questioned the decision to give him a new contract in the summer due to his age and recent injury record.

However, it already looks like a shrewd call by Pedersen to hand Cooper an extension, with the ex-Leeds United man's experience proving crucial so far this season, and his performances have been even more impressive considering he has played alongside a number of different defensive partners.

With the Owls' attack yet to start firing consistently, having a solid defence has been particularly important for the South Yorkshire outfit in the early stages of the season, and they will be hoping Cooper can stay fit and continue to lead their promotion charge.
