The Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has demanded that head coach Danny Rohl returns to the club as the stand-off between the two continues.

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl has been instructed to return from his holidays early to Hillsborough by owner Dejphon Chansiri, as the crisis engulfing the club continues to grow.

Sheffield Wednesday have been left in a state of limbo since the end of the 2024/25 season.

Despite having finished the season in a creditable 12th place in the Championship, Rohl has been continuously linked with a move away from the club since. This follows persistent rumours of a breakdown in relations between himself and Chansiri over the second half of the season.

Rohl returned to Germany at the end of the 2024/25 season and has yet to come back to England. It has been widely expected that he was to be appointed to a position at another club this summer, although negotiations already held elsewhere have thus far amounted to nothing.

Dejphon Chansiri demands that Danny Rohl returns to work with Sheffield Wednesday ASAP

The Sun now reports that the Wednesday owner, Dejphon Chansiri, is now demanding that Rohl return to Hillsborough and start preparing the team for the 2025/26 season, even though the head coach has been openly courting other jobs and has given no indication of wanting to return to the club.

Rohl is a highly-rated coach, and his potential availability has alerted clubs in both England and elsewhere.

He was closely linked to the vacant position at Southampton, where he'd formerly worked as a coach under Ralph Hasenhuttl, only for the Saints to opt for the former Lens head coach Will Still instead.

Rohl has also been linked with a possible return to the Bundesliga, but the sticking point may be compensation.

It has been reported that Wednesday want £5 million to release him from his contract. The head coach signed an extension to 2027 at the end of the 2023/24 season. Werder Bremen were reported to have baulked at the compensation that they'd have had to pay to take him to their club. There has also been reported interest from Wolfsburg.

These latest revelations only add to the feeling of crisis that has descended over Hillsborough in recent weeks. Rohl's coaching staff will also soon be out of contract, while the club has been charged by the EFL over paying their players late.

Wednesday have just been through the process of their retained and released list for the end of the season, but there will now be questions over whether players will stay if their contracts are breached with these late payments; Wednesday were late paying them two months in three, towards the end of the 2024/25 season.

Chansiri is facing an accumulation of problems that he seems ill-equipped to deal with.

It remains vanishingly unlikely that Danny Rohl will be returning to Hillsborough, and if player wages aren't brought up to date and paid on time, their most valuable players could be cherry-picked by other clubs.

The owner has already turned down offers to sell Sheffield Wednesday, but the calls for him to do so will only grow, as this wholly avoidable summer crisis continues to deepen.
