Wednesday remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship table amid their financial struggles, whereas Stevenage and Wycombe are both in the hunt for a League One play-off spot.

The Owls suffered their 20th defeat of the second-tier season when they were beaten 1-0 by sixth-place Wrexham on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Stevenage's League One play-off credentials took a dent on the weekend thanks to their 3-1 loss to Barnsley, whereas Wycombe were held to a 0-0 draw by Mansfield Town.

Wednesday have been relatively busy in the transfer market even though they remain in administration, completing loan moves for players such as Manchester City youngster Jaden Heskey and Luton Town striker Jerry Yates.

The Owls could yet complete a deadline swoop, with Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke revealing via X that the South Yorkshire club, Wycombe, and Stevenage, are all plotting loan moves for Villa youngster Rory Wilson, alongside overseas outfits.

The 20-year-old has never made a senior appearance for Villa, but his credentials in youth football make impressive reading, as he is a Scotland Under-21 international.

Unai Emery appears eager to let the striker earn senior minutes elsewhere, with the Premier League club heavily reliant on England international Ollie Watkins, while former Swansea City man Tammy Abraham has joined the top-flight outfit in the winter transfer window.

Indeed, Emery himself has previously been quoted as describing how Wilson possesses many of the qualities that he and the club value - which makes this an exciting potential move for Wednesday.

Wilson is at a vital stage in his career, as he seeks regular senior minutes away from Villa Park.

The 20-year-old could favour a move to either Stevenage or Wycombe over joining Wednesday, even though the Championship is a more prestigious division than League One.

Wednesday remain in a difficult position due to the uncertainty regarding their future, which is arguably an undesirable environment for Wilson to join, whereas both third-tier clubs are in a largely buoyant mood amid their respective play-off bids.

The Villa youngster could thrive in League One, similarly to how Leeds United starlet Harry Gray has adjusted to life on loan with Rotherham United.
