We looked at some of the potential transfer dilemmas Sheffield Wednesday could face in the January window.
After an inconsistent start to the season, Sheffield Wednesday will likely be hoping to do business in the January transfer window.
Wednesday narrowly avoided relegation last season following an incredible turnaround under Danny Rohl, and while they have shown clear signs of progress in the opening months of this campaign, they have been unpredictable at times.
With that in mind, Rohl may be keen to strengthen his squad in January ahead of the second half of the season, but he could also look to sanction the departures of some of those who are not in his plans.
A number of senior players left Hillsborough as part of Rohl's summer rebuild, but with some struggling for game time this season, there could be further exits in the New Year.
With the January window fast approaching, we looked at some of the potential transfer dilemmas that Rohl could face.
Goalkeeper Pierce Charles is one of Wednesday's brightest young prospects, and he looks set to have a big future ahead of him.
Charles started all four of the Owls' EFL Cup games this season, and after making his senior debut for Northern Ireland in the October international break, he has kept three clean sheets in four appearances for Michael O'Neill's side, earning plenty of plaudits for his shot-stopping and distribution skills.
Some Owls supporters have called for Charles to be given a chance to start in recent weeks, but Rohl confirmed that Brighton & Hove Albion loanee James Beadle will remain as his number one, which could give the German a decision to make on Charles in January.
Charles is likely to take over from Beadle as Wednesday's first choice when he returns to the Amex Stadium in the summer, but considering his lack of senior experience, there has been speculation that he could be sent out on loan in January.
Rohl has praised the competition between Beadle and Charles, which could indicate that he is keen for the 19-year-old to remain at Hillsborough, but should a top League One club come in for him in January, that stance could change.
Callum Paterson made the move to Hillsborough from Cardiff City in September 2020, and he has played in a host of positions for Wednesday over the last four years, including right-back, centre-back, central midfield, out wide and up front.
After returning from injury towards the end of last season, Paterson played an important role in his side's survival, and the Owls triggered their option to keep him at the club for another year this summer.
Despite being retained by Wednesday in the summer, Paterson surprisingly found himself out of favour at the start of the campaign, and it was claimed in August that the 30-year-old was free to leave if the club received a suitable offer.
Just a few weeks ago, Paterson's departure from Hillsborough in January looked inevitable, but he has forced his way back into contention, making a number of substitute appearances in recent games, and it will be intriguing to see if Rohl is still willing to allow him to move on.
Striker Charlie McNeill joined Wednesday on a free transfer this summer following his release by Manchester United, with the club reportedly fighting off competition from Lazio, Torino, LA Galaxy and Toronto to land his signature.
McNeill enjoyed a dream debut for the Owls as he scored twice in the 2-1 win at Hull City in the EFL Cup first round in August, but he has struggled to build on his impressive start to life at Hillsborough, and he is yet to feature in the league.
Given that the likes of Ike Ugbo, Jamal Lowe and Michael Smith have all failed to deliver in front of goal this season, McNeill will be particularly concerned by his lack of game time, and a loan move could be on the cards for him in January.
McNeill certainly should not be written off by Wednesday supporters just yet, but with Rohl clearly unconvinced that he is ready for the Championship, he may decide to sanction a temporary exit for the 21-year-old.
