It's been another tumultuous week for Sheffield Wednesday, whose future has been thrown into doubt since the end of the 2024-25 season.

Issues over the club's ownership and financial position have clouded Sheffield Wednesday's summer so far, after they ended last season in 12th place in the Championship.

With serious questions over the club's financial position, a transfer embargo put in place by the EFL, and doubts about who will be managing them by the start of the 2025-26 season, Wednesday have created a lot of headlines over the course of this summer, and there will be more to come.

With this in mind, here's a round-up of the latest news from Hillsborough over the course of this week.

Danny Rohl could be back in charge of Wednesday again after all

The club was rocked earlier this week by the news that head coach Danny Rohl was preparing to return to the club.

It had been widely reported that the highly-rated young coach's relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri had completely broken down, and Rohl has subsequently been linked with a number of jobs, including several clubs in the Bundesliga, Southampton, and Leicester City.

But it has now been reported that Rohl is set for a dramatic return to Hillsborough, although even this didn't take long to devolve into the chaos that has characterised their summer, with subsequent reports that a number of Sheffield Wednesday players and staff members would rather that he didn't return to his post.

Rohl didn't return to the club to take early pre-season training, and the timing of the decision coincides with reports that the Leicester manager's job is set to be given to Marti Cifuentes.

The manager is now set to have clear-the-air talks with the players, and the likelihood of Rohl being in charge for the start of the new season now seems at least as likely as not.

Agreement reached with one prospective buyer

It has also been reported this week that there could be no shortage of interest in buying the club, with the Sheffield Star having reported that there could be a "scramble" to get involved.

And BBC Sheffield's Rob Staton has reported that the sale could be coming sooner rather than later.

He reported on X that the club have reached agreement with "at least one" prospective buyer and that the necessary paperwork is now being sent to buyers to progress the sale of the club.

It has been widely reported that the prospective buyer is the American billionaire Tilman Fertitta, who is the owner of the Houston Rockets NBA team, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, and who, since May, has been the US Ambassador to Italy.

The Sun has reported that Fertitta may put money into the club to help them get through the next few weeks while any takeover is finalised, adding that he appears to be a significantly more credible candidate than other figures who have been exploring taking ownership of the Yorkshire club.

Another Wednesday bidder has been named, but he comes with baggage

BBC Sheffield's Rob Staton also reported on Friday evening that another bidder could be named in the chase to buy the club.

He tweeted that the Italian businessman Francesco Guardascione is heading a consortium which is interested in purchasing Sheffield Wednesday.

But Guardascione comes with considerable baggage, which will be concerning to Wednesday fans, having been involved in several failed bids to buy clubs in Italy and Spain in which payments for shares were not made after sales were agreed.

Fresh doubts arise concerning Djeidi Gassama's transfer to Rangers

Staton has also cast doubt upon the transfer of highly-rated winger Djeidi Gassama from Wednesday to the Scottish giants Rangers.

It had been widely reported that this transfer was a done deal, with only formalities left to be completed, but Staton reported on Friday morning that there may now be some doubt over Gassama’s move to Rangers.

The Scotsman newspaper has reported that Gassama met his prospective new team-mates last week, but that the deal for the 21-year-old is being stalled by financial difficulties at Wednesday.

However, Rangers manager Russell Martin commented on Friday: "I think it’s all done our end. I think with Sheffield Wednesday and the difficulties they are experiencing, it’s tough for them."

No formal explanation for this delay has been given, but speculation is already linking this story to both the possibility of Danny Rohl staying with the club and their ownership situation in a broader sense.
