Sheffield Wednesday on the brink of administration - it 'could happen today'

The Owls would be docked points as a result of this event happening.

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly moments away from entering administration, which could potentially spell the end of Dejphon Chansiri's reign of terror.

This comes after BBC Radio Sheffield, working alongside the Sheffield Star, revealed that Wednesday is set to be served with the winding-up petition imminently over the substantial debt to HMRC.

The legal action would, of course, increase the pressure on Dejphon Chansiri to finally relinquish control of the club he has owned for a decade - with the situation now reaching a point where administration appears to be the only remaining outcome.

It seems as though Chansiri’s attempts to negotiate a payment plan with HMRC to delay the winding-up order and avoid administration, as reported by journalist Alan Nixon, hasn't worked.

Sheffield Wednesday could enter administration "today"

Football reporter Alan Biggs tweeted on his X account that he understands Sheffield Wednesday are "finally on the brink of going into administration" - and there's a possibility it's today.

The aforementioned winding-up order is over an outstanding tax bill of £1m owed to HMRC - and could be the latest devastating blow in what has been a terrible period for the Owls both on and off the pitch.

Wednesday are already operating under the weight of six separate EFL embargoes following repeated failures to pay wages on time across five of the last seven months.

Players were initially paid late in March, with a second delay occurring in May, triggering EFL sanctions in June that barred the club from engaging in any player transfers or loans involving fees for three transfer windows.

The embargoes have since multiplied, with recent additions relating to these outstanding debts which could see them enter administration today.

Sheffield Wednesday may soon be deducted 12 points

Derby County, the last EFL club to enter administration (in 2021), were deducted 12 points for doing so - perhaps setting a precedent for what could await the Owls today.

On the pitch, Wednesday currently sit at the bottom of the Championship table with just six points from 11 matches, meaning they may find themselves on -6 soon.

Their solitary victory came in a trip to Portsmouth in September, and while the Owls followed it up with a pair of creditable draws, they have since suffered a string of three-straight defeats.

Yes, this is not the kind of situation any supporter wants for their club, but it is more likely now than it has been in the past that there will be change at the top of Sheffield Wednesday.

This is because entering administration would effectively end Chansiri's ownership of Wednesday, with the South Yorkshire club obviously being run by administrators until a new buyer can be found.

For now, though, with Biggs’ warning, it’s very much a waiting game for everyone connected with the club on when they’ll enter administration - and not if.
