Djeidi Gassama is expected to become one of Russell Martin’s first signings at Ibrox
Sheffield Wednesday forward Djeidi Gassama is closing in on a move to Scottish side Rangers.
That’s according to the Daily Record, reporting that personal terms have been agreed, following The Star's claims that the Owls have agreed broad terms with the Gers over the 21-year-old.
He impressed last season, notching seven goals in 43 Championship appearances under Danny Rohl.
There had been interest from elsewhere in the Championship, but it appears Rangers have won the race as the Owls battle ongoing financial difficulties.
It was revealed by The Star that Gassama is moving rapidly towards sealing a move north of the border to join Scottish giants Rangers.
The Daily Record adds that Gassama has agreed terms with Rangers, so only the club-to-club negotiations are left to be resolved.
The transfer fee remains undisclosed at present as the final details are worked through, but the Daily Record believe it to be close to £2.5m.
It had been revealed by journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon page, over the weekend that Blackburn Rovers were admirers of Gassama.
Rovers enquired about the player who Wednesday were believed to value at £2.5m – close to what they have reportedly been offered by Rangers – but had yet to agree a fee with the Yorkshire outfit.
Blackburn lost Tyrhys Dolan this summer, and Gassama looked like he has the potential to be a strong replacement, but it seems they have missed the boat on the deal.
They may look back and regret the time taken to progress their Gassama interest, especially if they don’t land on a secondary target to fill their Dolan vacancy.
It is never easy selling one of your brightest talents, but it is certainly more worrying when going through the difficulties currently being faced by Wednesday.
The controversial ownership of Dejphon Chansiri appears to have reached boiling point, with the club handed a three-window transfer ban after staff were not paid their wages on time.
The Star also revealed that the restrictions are believed to include a wage cap of £7k per week, which makes it difficult to get out-of-contract stars like Barry Bannan signed back up.
It means that Owls fans are aware they’re unlikely to replace a talent like Gassama with any immediacy, but it is necessary for Wednesday to offload their most valuable assets to ensure any outstanding and upcoming wage bills can be settled.
Frustatingly for the Owls, of course, Gassama is poised to be sold at a fraction of what his real value would be without the ongoing financial turmoil at Hillsborough, and Wednesday will know the tricky winger has the potential to command a significant eight-figure sum in the years to come.
The Gassama sale is another ominous sign of where Wednesday are currently heading, but amid the chaos in Yorkshire, Rangers have bagged themselves a talented prospect.
