According to The Star, the 17-year-old is attracting interest from the Owls in the closing stages of the January transfer window.

The Yorkshire outfit have already brought in one youngster from the Premier League side this month, agreeing a temporary deal for Jaden Heskey.

However, the Championship side are still looking to strengthen Henrik Pedersen’s side further for the second half of the season.

The defender is capable of playing centre-back and left-back, and that kind of versatility could prove quite important given Sheffield Wednesday’s thin squad.

Sheffield Wednesday have set their sights on Stephen Mfuni as a potential improvement on the first team squad.

It is believed that the progress of Harry Amass during his spell on loan in the first half of the term is seen as an indication of what a move to Hillsborough could provide for the teenager.

Pedersen is also seen as a coach that can improve young stars, giving Sheffield Wednesday optimism that a deal can be agreed for the defender.

However, the Owls must get approval from the EFL before completing any deals due to transfer restrictions placed on them.

The Yorkshire outfit remain in administration, with the league yet to ratify the takeover bid led by James Bord.

Sheffield Wednesday were interested in keeping Amass, but the Man United left-back has instead moved to Norwich City on loan for the second half of the campaign, prompting this pursuit of Mfuni.

The club are also not the only Championship side interested in the youngster, with Man City open to a loan deal before Monday’s 7pm deadline.

Next up for Sheffield Wednesday is a home clash against sixth place Wrexham on 31 January in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Stephen Mfuni signing could be great for Sheffield Wednesday

Anybody coming through the door at Hillsborough between now and 7pm on Monday could be a great addition for Sheffield Wednesday.

Options are obviously limited, but somebody of Mfuni’s standing could prove quite a coup, as his versatility will be extremely useful for Pedersen.

The Amass deal didn’t work out for the Owls in the end, with the player moving to Carrow Road this month, but the long-lasting impact of his time at the club could work in their favour.

His development has been noticed elsewhere, and that could help the club get other deals over the line in the future, including this one for Mfuni.
