Sheffield Wednesday should hijack Reading's move for Rotherham United forward Sam Nombe

Sheffield Wednesday are set for a major rebuild this summer following their relegation to League One and the takeover completed by David Storch.

The Owls spent the majority of the season in administration, a situation that Storch's Arise consortium rescued them from ahead of their Championship final day clash with West Bromwich Albion.

Much to the delight of a sold-out Hillsborough Stadium crowd, Henrik Pedersen's men defeated the Baggies 2-1 on 2 May, thanks to goals from Nathaniel Chalobah and Liam Palmer.

That victory marked Wednesday's second of the season, epitomising their struggles, whereas they will want to be at the right end of the League One table next term.

Wednesday can be active in the summer transfer window because Storch completed his takeover by the 1 May deadline he set himself.

However, following their time in administration, which came thanks to former owner Dejphon Chansiri's recklessness and negligence, the Owls will be under EFL budget restrictions this summer.

Importantly, the South Yorkshire club have not been deducted 15 points ahead of their League One campaign, which was a serious possibility because Storch's bid fell below the amount required to pay creditors 25p in the pound.

Consequently, Wednesday can begin plotting an immediate Championship return, despite the aforementioned EFL budget restrictions.

The Owls' time in administration, and Chansiri's previous inability to pay players on time, left Pedersen with a squad that lacked both depth and quality, meaning that the Hillsborough outfit must strengthen their squad in all areas this summer.

Recruiting a striker who can perform in League One is a particular priority for a club who scored just 29 goals in 46 Championship games this term.

As reported by the Sheffield Star, Wednesday have internally discussed a permanent deal for Jerry Yates, who has been on loan at Hillsborough Stadium from third-tier outfit Luton Town.

However, The Star added that a deal for the 29-year-old, who scored four goals in 18 Championship appearances for the Owls, will be complicated because the Hatters paid just over £1million for his services last summer, and he is under contract at Kenilworth Road until 2028.

With that in mind, Pedersen's side may have to look elsewhere in their search for a goalscorer.

And one of Wednesday's divisional rivals for next season - Reading FC - are eyeing a move for Rotherham United's Sam Nombe, according to the Reading Chronicle, having scored 12 goals in League One this term despite the Millers' relegation to League Two.

However, the Owls should perhaps be plotting to hijack the Berkshire club's advances for Nombe, as the 27-year-old could prove to be a great alternative to Yates.

Rotherham's relegation to League Two should make Nombe available at a cut-price, which is ideal for Wednesday amid their budget restrictions.

Furthermore, swapping the Millers for their South Yorkshire rivals would make logistical sense for the striker, who would not have to relocate.

Sam Nombe could be a real asset for Sheffield Wednesday for several reasons

Hijacking Reading's move for Nombe so early in Storch's ownership would be a bold move for Wednesday, which could prove highly beneficial in the third tier.

Most importantly, the former Exeter City man has proven himself as a good goalscorer in League One, notching double figures this term despite his side's relegation and his injury issues.

Furthermore, Pedersen's squad currently lacks experience, which is a quality that Nombe brings to the table while also having plenty of playing years ahead of him.

The Owls are set to face an extremely important summer, as they vie to recover from the damage inflicted by Chansiri, and hijacking Reading's Nombe swoop would certainly bolster their attack.
