This will come as a huge boost to the club, with the midfielder returning just six months after his move to Millwall.

The 36-year-old became club captain prior to his exit in the winter market, having spent over 10 years at Hillsborough during his first stint.

And Bannan is now closing in on a return, as he looks to help Sheffield Wednesday get back to a competitive level.

It has been reported by The Star that Sheffield Wednesday are targeting a move for Aston Villa’s Louie Barry.

It is hoped that the two clubs can come to an agreement on a permanent deal, but a loan move has also not been ruled out.

The 23-year-old joined bitter rivals Sheffield United on loan last summer, but he made just nine league appearances before being recalled in the January window.

Barry returned to Stockport County for a third loan stint in the winter market, with former Stockport sporting director Simon Wilson now in charge of recruitment at Hillsborough.

The shot stopper made eight appearances in the Championship while on loan at Hillsborough last season.
