The Canadian striker’s future was in the balance at the end of his maiden Owls campaign

Sheffield Wednesday appear to be closing in on an exit for Ike Ugbo, with the striker reportedly nearing a move away from Hillsborough after a difficult two years with the club.

The Canada international's departure has been expected for much of the summer, with Henrik Pedersen rebuilding his squad following a disastrous relegation campaign.

Reports suggest Ugbo could be heading to Cypriot side Apollon Limassol on a season-long loan, with all parties keen to find a solution.

It marks a disappointing end to a transfer that once looked like a major coup for the Owls. After an outstanding loan spell during the second half of the 2023/24 Championship season, Wednesday fought off competition to secure Ugbo's permanent signature.

At the time, the deal represented a statement of intent. In hindsight, though, it has become one of the club's biggest recruitment disappointments in recent years.

There is little doubt that Wednesday will be relieved to see Ugbo move on this summer.

The forward returned with a huge amount of expectation after scoring seven goals in 19 appearances during his initial loan spell at Hillsborough. His performances helped the Owls survive relegation, with his movement and finishing making him a popular figure among supporters.

However, that form completely disappeared following his permanent return.

Across 55 league games for the club since signing permanently, he has registered zero goals.

The frustration surrounding Ugbo's struggles comes largely because Wednesday's decision to sign him permanently was so understandable at the time.

After arriving from Troyes in January 2024, Ugbo immediately looked like a player capable of making a significant impact at Championship level. He scored five goals in February alone and finished the campaign as one of Danny Rohl's most important attacking players.

That form naturally attracted attention. Sunderland, Birmingham City and Stoke City were among the clubs linked with a move, but Wednesday were determined to bring Ugbo back, eventually winning the race.

It felt like the kind of ambitious recruitment that had been missing from Hillsborough for years. The club had identified a player who had already proven himself in their system and moved decisively to secure his services.

Unfortunately, football transfers rarely work out exactly as expected.

The Ugbo who returned to Wednesday was not the same player who had terrorised Championship defences during his loan spell. Confidence appeared to disappear, goals dried up, and the relationship between player and supporters gradually deteriorated.

While Ugbo's exit will inevitably be viewed through the lens of disappointment, there is also a wider significance to his departure.

Wednesday are no longer operating in the same circumstances as they were 12 months ago.

Following relegation from the Championship and the arrival of Arise Capital, the club have been forced to rethink their recruitment strategy and build a squad capable of competing at the top end of League One.

They are - however - still bound by EFL spending rules. That means every squad place and every financial decision carries more importance.

Ugbo's departure, even if it initially comes via a loan deal, allows Pedersen to reshape his attacking options around players who better suit the direction of the club.

The arrival of Mason Burstow highlights that change in approach. The former Chelsea forward enjoyed a productive League One campaign with Bolton Wanderers last season, scoring 12 goals as they secured promotion through the play-offs. Whether he can replicate that form at Hillsborough remains to be seen, but his profile represents the type of signing the Owls are now looking to make.

With the club aiming to return to the Championship at the first attempt, Pedersen needs a squad full of players who are hungry, adaptable and capable of improving over the course of the season.
