L’Equipe reports that Monaco want to keep Simon Adingra but are unlikely to trigger Sunderland’s £14.8million option.
The Ivory Coast international joined on loan in January after limited minutes on Wearside in the first half of the season. He made 16 appearances and 11 starts, mostly at left wing-back.
His deal runs until 30 June, and Monaco are understood to be tempted to retain the 24-year-old. A permanent move at the pre-agreed price is viewed as unlikely given the finances.
His loan carried a €17million purchase clause, around £14.8million, and Monaco paid a €1million fee, about £870,000, in January. Wout Faes’ switch from Leicester City includes a €7.5million option, roughly £6.5million.
With Ligue 1 TV income down and European uncertainty, the chances of Monaco activating the full Adingra clause are considered very low.
Monaco could instead pursue a lower fee with Sunderland or explore another loan, although Adingra is under contract with the Black Cats until 2030. They are also interested in keeping Faes without necessarily using the option.
For Sunderland, Adingra’s future will be watched closely this summer. His minutes in Monaco have preserved his value and profile, but any stay would likely require fresh talks.
