Simon Adingra offered a sharp reminder of his talent during Sunderland’s 1-0 pre-season loss to Leeds United in Harrison, New Jersey, using a lively half hour to trouble the defence from the right. He faces an uncertain future at the Stadium of Light.

Back in the hazy lull between Christmas and new year, he curled in his first Sunderland goal to put them ahead in an eventual 1-1 draw with Leeds, looking bright, positive and technically assured. Sunderland paid upwards of £21 million for him after promotion, and Sunderland Echo noted at the time that his display could prove a breakthrough.

It did not materialise. After more subdued outings, the 24-year-old left on loan to AS Monaco in January, with Nilson Angulo parachuted in as cover. He then went to a World Cup, playing only a quarter of an hour, and returned to a pre-season with his next step unresolved.

Against Leeds in New Jersey he again showed flashes, drifting into dangerous areas from a relatively unfamiliar right flank. On another day he might have supplied a late assist.

Most striking was his application. Rather than meander, he appears intent on making the most of pre-season and reminding clubs of his qualities.

At this stage it feels relatively certain he will depart before the window closes, with others ahead of him on the left. Keeping such a significant investment as a third or fourth-choice option makes little sporting or financial sense.
