Sunderland winger Simon Adingra is closing in on a loan move to AS Monaco. According to Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement is in place on a deal worth €one million with a €17 million buy option, with visa formalities and a medical to follow.
Earlier on Monday, Media Foot reported that Monaco were offering the 24-year-old a route out of the Premier League, and also suggested late interest from Saudi Arabia. If those figures are accurate, Sunderland would receive around £866,000 initially, rising by a further £14.8 million should the transfer become permanent.
Adingra only arrived in the summer window and has struggled for minutes in the first half of the campaign, registering just one goal to date. Debate in Ivory Coast has grown over whether a move would help him recapture form.
“Simon Adingra is a technically gifted player, but not explosive. He’s also not very involved in defensive efforts, which is what you need to succeed in the Premier League,” said Alex Payne, speaking to Sport News Africa.
Fellow journalist Izoudine Ilupeju added: “For his own good, he needs to leave the English league as soon as possible. He could look at the French, German, Belgian, or Dutch leagues to get in shape and shine.”
