Simon Adingra will return to Sunderland for 2026/27 after AS Monaco declined to buy the winger, while FC Porto have registered interest in Eliezer Mayenda. Key calls now await Régis Le Bris.

Monaco confirmed on Monday they would not activate their purchase option. The club said in a statement that Adingra made 17 appearances, scoring three with two assists. He joined on deadline day earlier this year, which cleared the way for Sunderland to sign Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht.

Adingra started brightly and featured regularly, though inconsistent form, coupled with Monaco missing the Champions League, appears to have shaped the outcome. Had the clause been taken up, Sunderland would have recouped a significant portion of the initial £18 million paid to Brighton last summer.

Ivory Coast face Norway in the last 32 of the World Cup on Tuesday, 6pm UK time. On his return for pre-season, Le Bris will have four senior left wingers, with Angulo and Chemsdine Talbi having been expected to play major roles last campaign. Romaine Mundle is expected to be fully fit for the start of pre-season after a hamstring injury, though his future, like Adingra’s, appears uncertain.

Sunderland must now decide whether to reintegrate Adingra or seek a move for him, either on loan or permanently.

Porto’s interest in Mayenda was followed by claims of a deal being close that were swiftly downplayed in Portugal. Several clubs remain in contention and the 21-year-old is weighing up his long-term options. Stade Rennais have held initial talks and he is thought to favour a permanent exit for more minutes, with Brian Brobbey’s form limiting opportunities.

Sunderland are unlikely to stand in his way and a sale could deliver a major profit, in cash and SCR terms, after signing him for just under £1 million in 2023.
