Speaking to Sky Germany, Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes has given his opinion on the comments by Bayern Munich on Florian Wirtz.

When asked about the increase in comments about Bayern wanting to sign Leverkusen’s star player in the future, Rolfes said:

This comes after the likes of Uli Hoeneß have been publically declaring their admiration of Wirtz and how he is Bayern’s ‘dream player’. Luckily for Leverkusen, Wirtz is nearing extending his contract at the club until 2028.

On Saturday, Leverkusen host Bayern in a top-of-the-table clash, which if they lose basically ends their defence of the title as the game between die Werkself and Bayern will be 11 points. On the other hand, if Leverkusen win then the gap will be down to five points, but they will need to be close to perfection if they want to retain their Bundesliga title.

Bayern’s tactic is a tale as old as time. Previously, Bayern had announced the signing of Mario Götze before Borussia Dortmund played a big Champions League game. Whilst they have also repeatedly announced signings of players earlier in the season and that has resulted in disrupting the selling club’s season such as Schalke with Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka and RB Leipzig. These are just recent examples, in the past Thomas Helmer had a messy divorce with Dortmund before joining Bayern after a third party got involved.
