Iké Ugbo is on his way from Hillsborough on a season-long loan, and the Sheffield Wednesday sporting director has given the reasons why it's happened.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Ike Ugbo has left Hillsborough on a season-long loan, and an official statement from the club has confirmed the reasons why.

Few other clubs in the entire EFL are expected to look as different in 2026-27 as Sheffield Wednesday. It's been a huge summer at Hillsborough, with enormous comings and goings, as the club seek as quick a return to the Championship following their relegation at the end of last season.

Fan favourite and club legend Barry Bannan has returned following half a season with Millwall, while among the other new arrivals at the club are the former Aston Villa winger Louie Barry, strikers Mason Burstow and Harry Gray, on loan from Hull City and Leeds United respectively, and the former Swansea City defender Ricardo Santos.

But in order to accommodate these new arrivals, players also have to be moved on, and the release of one forward, whose time at Hillsborough has been an almost complete flop, has prompted a statement from the club itself explaining the reasons for his departure.

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that forward Ike Ugbo is leaving Hillsborough to go on a season-long loan in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol. Ugbo made 81 appearances for Wednesday over two and a half years, scoring nine goals.

The club have issued a statement confirming Ugbo's departure, and the statement includes comments from sporting director Simon Wilson has clarified the reasons behind why the forward has come to leave for Apollon Limassol.

Wilson states that, "After a difficult period, Iké asked the club to facilitate a fresh start this summer, with the objective getting back to his best for the benefit of himself and the club."

He confirms that the club have worked with the player in order to make this move a reality, saying that, "We have worked collaboratively together throughout the off season to identify the right opportunity and believe we have secured something we are all happy with."

The statement closes with the sporting director issuing Ugbo all the best for the move, indicating that there is little prospect of the forward returning to Hillsborough: "We all go into this next chapter with positivity and optimism, and wish Iké well."

As can be seen from the majority of Sheffield Wednesday fans' social media comments, Ike Ugbo's time at Hillsborough didn't work out, but there were extremely high hopes for him when he first arrived at Hillsborough on loan from Troyes in February 2024.

Ugbo was, after all, a product of the Chelsea youth academy who was selected to play for England's under-17 and under-20 youth teams before he switched his international allegiance and made nine appearances for the Canada national team.

And initially, it looked like Ugbo was the right fit for Wednesday. His loan spell with the club yielded seven goals from 18 Championship appearances throughout the second half of the 2023-24 season, and this was enough to persuade the club to spend £2.5 million on the forward the following summer.

The two seasons since then, however, have been pretty much an unmitigated disaster for the player. He managed 62 appearances for the club in all competitions but could only register one goal in that time, against Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup in August 2025. His 55 Championship appearances over those two seasons ended with him having recorded neither a single goal nor a single assist.

With the winds of change blowing briskly through Hillsborough following their acquisition by David Storch's Arise Capital group at the end of last season, it was clear that Ugbo's time with the club was coming to an end.

A season-long loan could suit the player well. It offers the opportunity for a reset as well as offering him a shot at European football for them in the Europa League, while also keeping Wednesday's options open in the future. Should he be a hit for Apollon Limassol, the club could yet recoup the transfer fee that they paid for him in the first place. That would at least make for a happier ending to the story of Ike Ugbo's time at Hillsborough for both the club and the player.
