Inter boss Simone Inzaghi reviewed his side’s performance in Saturday’s dominant 3-0 league victory against bottom-half Cagliari. During his post-match chat with DAZN via Calciomercato, the Scudetto-winning manager assessed Nerazzurri’s chances of ascending the UEFA Champions League throne.
Inter strolled to a routine triumph at the Unipol Domus despite firing another first-half blank. Indeed, second-half strikes from Alessandro Bastoni, Lautaro Martinez, and Hakan Calhanoglu inspired the reigning holders to a fifth consecutive win in Serie A.
“At the end of the first half, we complimented the team,” Inzaghi admitted. “It wasn’t simple to come here and get a result; they were coming off three consecutive losses that weren’t deserved. We knew we were facing a wounded but alive team.“
In addition to extending their jaw-dropping unbeaten run in Italy’s top flight to 12 matches, Inter whittled down the gap on Atalanta to only one point. With a game in hand on all fellow title rivals, they’re in good shape to reclaim the top spot in 2025.
Meanwhile, Inter are on the verge of securing automatic knockout qualification at Europe’s top table. Despite slumping to a 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen last time out, they’re in pole position to secure a coveted top-eight finish.
“Winning the Champions League? We know we are Inter; we have objectives, and it’s right to declare them,” Inzaghi was adamant. “We need everyone’s availability – some for 90 minutes, some for 30, some for 12 minutes.”
Inter ended 2024 on a high. However, there’s no room for celebration as they take on Atalanta in a mouth-watering Supercoppa Italiana semi-final tie in four days.
