Sir Gareth Southgate surprised staff at Moortown Post Office in Leeds with a quiet visit for stamps last Friday just after 11am.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, postmistress Ree Williams and colleague Meshie Roth were midway through a busy morning when the former England manager slipped in unnoticed. The shop and car park were briefly quiet.
He asked for a book of stamps, then calmly stuck one on a card. The pair thought they recognised him from football but could not place him, and Roth asked if that was where she knew him from. He smiled, said yes, and happily posed for a quick photo with Williams.
Expecting he would be watching the tournament, Williams asked if he was following the football. He replied it was too late for him. Williams admitted she still had not worked out exactly who he was and felt mortified to be in casual clothes on a hot day.
Minutes later, another customer saw their picture and suggested it was Sir Gareth Southgate, which made the penny drop. The encounter lasted three or four minutes.
Williams first shared the photos with family, then posted them on the post office’s Facebook page on Sunday night. By Monday the post had taken off, and by Tuesday afternoon it had reached more than 100,000 people with hundreds of likes and shares.
She said the reaction shows the affection many still feel for Southgate, describing him as humble, lovely and a real gentleman.
