João Palhinha’s future at FC Bayern is hanging in the balance and there are currently many indications that they could part ways for good in the summer. What was once thought to be a strategically important transfer is increasingly turning into a complicated personnel case
When the Portuguese moved to Munich in the summer of 2024, he was seen as the missing piece of the defensive midfield puzzle. But the reality now looks different. His current loan to Tottenham Hotspur in particular is causing uncertainty – both in sporting and strategic terms
As BILD reporter Heiko Niedderer explains in the Bayern Insider podcast, the situation is anything but clear: „The situation is very diffuse, it has to be said, because we all know that Tottenham are in the midst of a relegation battle.“
Spurs‘ sporting crisis has a direct impact on Palhinha’s prospects. The unclear coaching situation in particular makes long-term planning difficult. While Thomas Frank was considered a supporter of the Portuguese, there is apparently a lack of clear support under new coach Igor Tudor. „With the current coach, it’s not quite clear where he wants to go, where he’s going,“ Niedderer continued
Palhinha himself could very well imagine staying at Spurs until Frank left. However, the situation has changed. Tottenham have a purchase option worth around €30 million. But a permanent stay in London is currently anything but certain. Instead, there are indications that Spurs may not take up this option – making a return to Munich a realistic option

The sporting hierarchy in midfield has changed significantly at Säbener Straße, with Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic establishing themselves as a new regular duo that is clearly at the center of the team’s plans
Even the imminent departure of Leon Goretzka does not change Palhinha’s situation. Internally, Bayern are focusing on young solutions such as Tom Bischof and returnee Noel Aseko. The Portuguese no longer plays a role in these considerations
Therefore, the goal of those responsible is clearly defined: a sale in the summer. According to BILD, Munich are hoping to achieve a transfer fee of around 30 million euros – significantly less than the 50 million euros they once paid for him. How realistic this is remains to be seen, as Palhinha’s current market value is estimated at just 18 million euros
Nevertheless, there is still a market for the international, particularly in the Premier League. Several clubs are said to be interested, which strengthens FC Bayern’s negotiating position. According to Niedderer, there are also reportedly inquiries from other leagues.
