With the 2025/26 season entering its final sprint, Sunderland are already eyeing the summer window. They are still pushing for an unexpected European spot, but recruitment planning is under way regardless.

According to Sunderland Echo, Europe proved fruitful last year, with Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele, Robin Roefs and Noah Sadiki among the arrivals. Google’s Gemini has highlighted six further options from across the continent.

Bradley Locko, Stade Brestois left-back, could future-proof the flank, marrying strong one-v-one defending with excellent ball progression and resale potential.

Morten Frendrup of Genoa profiles as a succession plan to Xhaka at 33, a relentless ball-winner who presses aggressively. At 25, he offers top-flight experience in his physical prime.

Valencia striker Hugo Duro embodies the modern, hard-working forward who presses, harries and makes selfless runs. He could complement Brian Brobbey and suit Regis Le Bris’ high-intensity approach.

Wolfsburg winger Patrick Wimmer would add directness on the right and consistent work out of possession. At 24, his Bundesliga pedigree appeals, and with Wolfsburg in the relegation zone, a deal could be attainable.

Villarreal centre-back Logan Costa could deepen competition alongside Dan Ballard and Omar Alderete. Powerful in duels and composed on the ball, the 25-year-old also offers scope for a back-three.

AZ Alkmaar’s Sven Mijnans would share the creative load with Enzo Le Fée. The 26-year-old has shone in a deep Conference League run and a domestic cup triumph, and can operate as a number 10 or in tandem.
