Manchester United’s stance on Kobbie Mainoo is clear, firm but layered with nuance. Credit to Sky Sports News for reporting that United will only consider selling the academy graduate in January if an exceptional offer arrives. Anything short of that, and Old Trafford’s hierarchy have little appetite to part with a player they still see as central to Ruben Amorim’s long term thinking.
Despite his struggles for minutes this season, Mainoo’s value inside the club remains high. As Sky Sports News has been told, the 20 year old “remains a key part of Ruben Amorim’s plans”, with a widespread belief that patience will be rewarded as he matures further.
Interest is certainly there. “A string of Premier League clubs are interested in him, but only a handful could afford a permanent deal”, underlining why United feel no pressure to compromise. Mainoo’s relatively modest wages, due to his progression through the academy, also remove any financial incentive to sanction a loan.
Sending him out temporarily would create more problems than solutions. United would need midfield cover, increasing expenditure on a replacement who would lack Mainoo’s familiarity with the club’s environment. From a cost control perspective, it simply “makes no financial sense for United’s hierarchy to send Mainoo out on loan”.
The challenge lies less in talent and more in structure. Amorim has been candid. “We play with two midfielders,” he said. “We could change in the future but Kobbie Mainoo is playing in the same position as Bruno Fernandes and sometimes it’s really hard to take Bruno Fernandes out of the team and that is the only reason.”

When pressed further, his admiration was unmistakable. “Of course. Like everyone else.” This clarity matters, especially amid outside noise and visible frustration from the player.
Mainoo’s popularity has not dimmed. Loud cheers greeted his introduction against Bournemouth, while the viral “Free Kobbie Mainoo” t shirt worn by his brother captured the mood of a fanbase eager to see more of him. The frustration is understandable. He has yet to start a Premier League game this season and his only 90 minute outing came in the Carabao Cup defeat at Grimsby Town.
The uncertainty lies in “how the player himself might react”, and whether continued time on the fringes could force a rethink from both sides as the season unfolds.
From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, this report sparks both reassurance and anxiety. Reassurance, because the club clearly values Mainoo and recognises his ceiling. Anxiety, because we have seen this story before. Talented academy players praised internally but blocked externally by system choices and senior names.
The explanation around Bruno Fernandes makes tactical sense, yet it also highlights a rigidity that fans worry about. United are in a rebuild phase under Amorim, so why not find ways to integrate a midfielder who was starting for England at a European Championship final in Berlin? That pedigree does not disappear overnight.
There is also a broader concern about stagnation. Mainoo “has struggled for minutes” and confidence is fragile at this age. Supporters want development through exposure, not protection through omission. If January passes without minutes increasing, questions will inevitably grow louder, regardless of how exceptional an offer would need to be.
For now, United holding firm feels right. Selling Mainoo would signal panic, not planning. But the club must match words with action. Belief in potential must be reflected on the pitch, otherwise this carefully controlled situation could drift into a very familiar United problem.
