Reaction at Anfield clouds Alexander-Arnold’s farewell

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first outing since confirming his impending move to Real Madrid was met with a frosty reception at Anfield, as a section of the home crowd jeered the defender during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

The surprising hostility marked a stark shift in sentiment towards one of the club’s most decorated academy graduates and came just days after his formal announcement that he will depart for the Spanish capital this summer.

Alexander-Arnold, who has been with Liverpool since the age of six, was introduced in the second half, only to receive boos from parts of the stadium – a reaction that visibly unsettled teammates and staff.

Andy Robertson expressed disappointment, stating: “It’s not nice. No player deserves that,” while Virgil van Dijk also shared concerns about the treatment of a long-serving colleague. Head coach Arne Slot offered a diplomatic response, saying: “Everyone can have their opinion… but my job is to win games,” and praised the right-back’s impact, which included two incisive passes that nearly produced a late winner.

Real Madrid move accelerates ahead of FIFA Club World Cup

Behind the scenes, Real Madrid are eager to finalise Alexander-Arnold’s early release so he can join them in time for June’s FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament, hosted in the United States, kicks off on June 14 – just over two weeks before his Liverpool contract expires on June 30.

Madrid have floated a proposal believed to be in the region of £850,000 to Liverpool, covering the player’s June salary and securing his registration during FIFA’s official pre-tournament window (June 1–10). Their opening fixture is scheduled for June 18 against Al-Hilal, with further group matches to follow against Pachuca and Salzburg.

With prize money of up to £100 million at stake, Madrid are keen to integrate the England international as soon as possible. The decision to make this push was widely anticipated, especially given that Liverpool’s domestic campaign concludes in May, potentially easing negotiations.

Liverpool yet to receive formal offer from Madrid

However, despite interest from the Spanish giants, Liverpool have yet to receive a formal bid. Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol revealed on Monday that while contact was made a week ago, Real Madrid have not followed up with an official approach.

Solhekol noted: “Real Madrid contacted Liverpool a week ago to discuss the possibility of signing Trent Alexander-Arnold before his contract expires on June 30, as they want him available for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which starts on June 14.”

This aligns with Madrid’s broader strategy to prepare their squad for the revamped tournament, with Alexander-Arnold viewed as a key figure in their plans.

Xabi Alonso targeted to lead Madrid’s Club World Cup squad

Alongside their push for Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid are working to secure Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. The former midfield maestro, who has guided Bayer Leverkusen to an exceptional campaign, recently confirmed his departure from the Bundesliga club at the end of the season.

Madrid are aiming to have both Alonso and Alexander-Arnold in place for their first fixture in the FIFA Club World Cup. If negotiations proceed as expected, it would mark a significant double statement ahead of the tournament in the U.S., reinforcing their long-term ambitions and immediate intent to dominate on a global stage.
