FIFA appointed Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to officiate Brazil's World Cup opener against Morocco on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The 46-year-old brings elite experience but also controversy from a 2020 police detention in Bosnia.

Vincic, part of FIFA and UEFA's elite referee group, has officiated major Champions League and Europa League matches. His appointment for the Group C clash reinforces FIFA's confidence in his abilities for high-profile games involving traditional powerhouses.

2020 Bosnia Police Operation

In May 2020, Vincic was detained during a police raid on a rural property in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Authorities investigated suspected prostitution, drug trafficking, and illegal weapons possession at the location where 35 people were present.

Police seized 10 pistols, cash amounts, medications, cocaine, and approximately €10,000 during the operation. The incident drew immediate European media attention due to Vincic's prominence in international football.

Referee Cleared of All Charges

Vincic denied involvement and explained he attended a business lunch invitation without knowing the meeting's context. "I ended up at this ranch by chance. I have my own company, and I was in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a business meeting. I accepted a lunch invitation, which turned out to be my biggest mistake," he told Slovenian media.

Investigations found no evidence against the referee. The case was closed without charges, and Vincic continued officiating elite matches for UEFA and FIFA.

World Cup Assignment Details

FIFA also announced the complete officiating crew for Brazil vs Morocco. Assistant referees Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic, both Slovenian, will support Vincic. Swiss officials Sandro Schaerer (fourth referee) and Stephane de Almeida (reserve referee) complete the team.

The match represents one of the opening round's marquee fixtures, with Brazil seeking another World Cup title while Morocco aims to build on recent international success. Group C also includes Haiti and Scotland.
