Arne Slot insists Trent Alexander-Arnold was not ‘distracted’ in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United, despite a sluggish display from the full back.

Leaders Liverpool were left frustrated after being held at Anfield, dropping two crucial points in their Premier League title quest.

Before the game, Slot insisted Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation would not prove a distraction, but fans were not convinced after a poor performance that saw him partly at fault for both goals.

When asked about Trent’s struggles, Slot was quick to defend the player: “I don’t believe in those things.

“I think nine out of 10 people will tell you it affected him, but I am one of the 10 that tells you I don’t think that affected him.

“What affected him was that he had to play against Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, two starters for Portugal. Great, great players. That is more difficult for Trent to play against than the rumours during the week.”

Slot acknowledged that Trent had some difficult moments but stressed that this wasn’t out of the ordinary for a player who has consistently performed at a high level for Liverpool.

“It was clear that Trent had some difficult moments, as we as a team had,” Slot added.

“But that’s not the first time for him. For the majority of games he’s played for this club, he’s been very, very good. I can’t believe people would say he’s never played a bad game.”
