Premier League icon Alan Shearer has cast serious doubt on Liverpool’s chances of mounting Premier League title challenge this season.

Liverpool currently sit eighth in the Premier League table with 18 point from 11 match — eight behind leaders Arsenal after suffering 5 defeat already this season.

Speaking to The Independent, Shearer admitted that Liverpool would need near perfect run to stay in the title conversation:

"I think they will have to win every game from now until the end of the season. I just don’t see that happening so I think their title race is over" said Shearer.

Shearer also took aim at the Reds structural issues particularly down the right flank where new signing Florian Wirtz has often been deployed in unfamiliar role.

"There are so many defensive problems — they’re all over the place. It’s not just one player or one position. They’re struggling to keep their shape" he explained.

"Salah isn't himself"

Turning his attention to Mohamed Salah, Newcastle United legend suggested that the Egyptian forward’s recent performances have fallen below his usual world class standard.

"Salah's nowhere near the level he was last season. Something’s not right... I don’t know if he feels that himself" said Shearer.

He speculated that the 32 years old’s mindset could have been affected by recent big money arrivals:

"Maybe it’s about the money spent on Wirtz & Alexander Isak. Perhaps he feels he’s no longer the main man. But clearly something isn’t right — whether it’s age, motivation or frustration , we’re not seeing the same Salah anymore".

Shearer concluded by stressing that Salah isn’t the only concern for Liverpool arguing that the club’s current struggles are systemic rather than individual.
