Enzo Fernandez is taking a well earned break this week after withdrawing from Argentina duty to recover from a knee injury.

That’s prompted some interesting discussion about his season so far, and his time at Chelsea as a whole.

The Athletic’s Simon Johnson did a nice piece which looked in detail about the crazy run of games that the Argentine has played for club and country since February 2022, when he definitively became a starter for River Plate.

Chelsea sources love Fernandez and think he’s perfect for Maresca

“There’s an awareness among sources within the club, who asked to be kept anonymous to protect relationships, that he has improved the most of any player under Maresca,” the article reads.

“He is regarded by the same sources as being a perfect system-fit for how the Italian wants his team to play.”

That’s interesting, as we wouldn’t necessarily agree. Fernandez is quite a dynamic player, and we would always think that Maresca would prefer a midfielder with more tendencies to just control games rather than break them open.

But no manager is going to complain about a player who gets into the box and makes things happen with goals and assists, especially when they are also able to play a lot of minutes and help the team out week after week. It’s an especially stark contrast compared to Romeo Lavia – perhaps a player even more in Maresca’s style, but one who can’t get fit to play a single game, let alone the 221 Fernandez has played since the start of 2022.

The podcast also took a look at the season as a whole, and quite correctly pointed out that the “vibes” weren’t quite matching up with the results, which have seen the Blues up to third place.

Chelsea’s rotation policy is something which is being questioned – but not internally. The club are fully behind Enzo Maresca’s decisions, according to the BBC.
