South Africa vs Canada: Moïse Bombito returns, Jonathan David and Derek Cornelius start

Moïse Bombito returns from a broken tibia to start for Canada against South Africa in the first round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday at 21:00 in Los Angeles. According to L'Équipe, the centre-back was close to missing the tournament after an almost blank season with Nice.
He replaces Luc de Fougerolles and partners the Marseille defender Derek Cornelius in a 4-4-2. Head coach Jesse Marsch has also named former Lille forward Jonathan David up front.
Alphonso Davies, also back from a hamstring problem, is on the bench. Canada XI: Crepeau, Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Laryea, Buchanan, N.Saliba, Eustaquio (cap.), Millar, J. David, Oluwaseyi.
For Bafana Bafana's first knockout match, Hugo Broos has made one change from the XI that qualified South Africa against South Korea on Thursday, 1-0. In midfield Teboho Mokoena starts for Thalente Mbatha.
Lyle Foster, who started the opening 0-2 defeat to Mexico, drops out for Evidence Makgopa. Captain Ronwen Williams is in goal, and South Africa line up as R.Williams (cap.), Mudau, Okon, Mbokazi, Modiba, Mokoena, Sithole, Maseko, Mofokeng, Appollis, Makgopa.
