Southampton were unable to earn a victory against Ipswich Town despite Cyle Larin putting the team ahead in the 80th minute
Southampton were unable to remain in automatic promotion contention with a win against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.
The Saints initially went behind at the start of a thrilling second half when Wes Burns gave Kieran McKenna’s side the lead.
But goals from Ryan Manning and Cyle Larin turned the game around for the Hampshire outfit, which put them in position to fight for a top two spot during this weekend’s final round of fixtures.
Jack Clarke came off the bench to break supporters’ hearts, with his 87th minute strike sealing a crucial point for the visitors.
It almost went from bad to worse when Ipswich had the ball in the back of the net in stoppage time, but Dan Neil being in an offside position in the build up saved Southampton’s blushes.
The club are guaranteed of a play-off place, and could still finish as high as third in the table, depending on results this Saturday.

Southampton have released an alternative angle of Larin’s 80th minute goal against Ipswich on Tuesday night.
The forward capped off a move that began with an incisive forward ball from Finn Azaz to Ryan Manning, who had tons of space in midfield to run into.
The Irishman found Larin on the edge of the right-hand side of the box, who took a touch before cutting inside to beat two Ipswich defenders to poke home the finish.
The new angle comes from behind the Southampton goal, and shows the pandemonium in the crowd as the ball hits the back of the net.
At that point, fans believed their side had turned around the game to move to within a point of the top two.
However, Clarke’s equaliser in the closing stages spoiled the party and has left Tonda Eckert’s side out of contention for automatic promotion from the Championship going into the final round of fixtures this weekend.
Southampton will have to settle for a play-off place, and Eckert will now be left with a tough choice this weekend in regards to team selection.
The 33-year-old could rotate the team and rest key players to give them a break before the play-offs begin.
Or he could maintain a full strength XI for the clash with Preston North End on Saturday in a bid to climb to either third or fourth in the table, and thus potentially earn a favourable set of fixtures in the play-offs.

Larin capped off an excellent piece of play with a fantastic touch to beat two Ipswich defenders in the box, putting him one on one with the goalkeeper.
The finish shows the attacking threat the Saints possess, as Azaz’s initial pass opened up so much space for Manning, who did well to find the striker.
If Southampton can perform at this level in the coming weeks, then they may even go into the play-offs as the favourites to win promotion.
And this angle of Larin’s strike shows just how much support the club will have in the play-offs, making St. Mary’s an intimidating place for any team to go to.
