Southampton have aimed a dig at Arsenal after knocking the Gunners out of the FA Cup at the beginning of April

Southampton have been in scintillating form over the past few months, with Tonda Eckert guiding the Saints from the lower reaches of the Championship into the play-off places, as well as knocking Premier League side Arsenal out of the FA Cup.

When Will Still was dismissed from his post in the St Mary's dugout at the beginning of November, few would have predicted how Southampton's season would unfold thereafter.

Heading into this campaign, Still was appointed as head coach of the Saints following their relegation from the Premier League, with his work in Belgium and France being lauded, earning him the gig in Hampshire.

However, four wins in 16 games led to his dismissal and the subsequent appointment of German boss Tonda Eckert, who has transformed the club's form.

With just five games remaining, Southampton have the chance to leapfrog Middlesbrough into 4th and solidify their place in the top six, having gone unbeaten in their last 17 games in all competitions, with victories over both Fulham and, most notably, Arsenal in the FA Cup to boot.

As recently as this morning, the Saints fired a shot at Arsenal, something which Southampton fans will love.

When Southampton hosted Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final in early April, unsurprisingly, the Gunners were viewed as clear favourites, with Mikel Arteta's side sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, and on course for a treble.

Arsenal had most recently lost out to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final, and headed to St Mary's with a vengeance, though Southampton had different plans.

Goals from Ross Stewart and Shea Charles gave the Saints a historic 2-1 victory over the Gunners to send them to the FA Cup semi-final, sparking wild celebrations among Southampton supporters.

Arsenal bounced back to winning ways against Sporting CP in the Champions League, but their 2-1 loss at home to Bournemouth means they have lost ground in the title race, and with Man City winning away to Chelsea on Sunday, it gave the Saints admin all the ammo they needed to fire a shot at Arsenal via Instagram.

A photo dump containing a picture of a water bottle branded with the Arsenal badge with no caption says a thousand words, as the Saints become the latest club to poke fun at the Gunners.

In Man City's victory over Chelsea, a City fan was seen drinking from a water bottle with an Arsenal badge branded on it, which has since gone viral on social media.

The Southampton admin has seen this and decided to jump on the trend, and with spirits on the South Coast as high as they have been in a while, who can blame them?

Arsenal still have the Premier League title in their own hands, but when they travel to the Etihad Stadium next Sunday, the stakes have never been higher, as the Gunners simply must avoid defeat to their title rivals.

Southampton, meanwhile, take their place at Wembley against the Citizens later this month and will be hoping to complete another historic upset on their way to the FA Cup final, where, at that point, they will hope to have secured a top-six finish in the Championship.

Eckert's appointment is proving to be a masterstroke by Southampton, who are reaping the rewards of trusting the German at the helm, and have jumped at the opportunity to poke fun at Arsenal.

Southampton will head into the FA Cup final undoubtedly as the lesser favoured of the two sides, and have their work cut out for them if they are to be successful against Man City.

However, having already masterminded victories against two Premier League sides since his appointment, with one of those leading the way at England's summit, there is no reason why Southampton can't do the same again.

Promotion to the Premier League will remain the main focus for Eckert and his side, though with FA Cup semi-finals not coming around every year, he and his side will relish the opportunity to step out under the arch at the United Kingdom's grandest venue.

No matter what happens at Wembley, Southampton will always have their triumph over Arsenal, and until the two clubs meet again, they will be happy to laud it over the Gunners.

Arsenal will be hoping to silence the critics with a victory next Sunday for multiple reasons, though if they don't, the likes of Southampton will almost certainly continue to fire shots at them.
