Southampton ‘in talks to sign’ Ivan Azon from Como | OneFootball

Southampton have opened talks to sign Ivan Azon from Como for around €9-10m, £7.5m-8.5m, according to Fabrizio Romano. After the £9 million arrival of Lewis Dobbin, attention has shifted to centre-forward recruitment.

With a summer policy of adding only after departures, Tonda Eckert’s side can now focus on a new talisman. Ross Stewart left on a free transfer on 30 June, complicating the search.

Azon, 23, spent last season on loan at Ipswich Town, scoring five Championship goals in 20 starts from an xG of 11.46. His parent club is Como.

Southampton faced similar scepticism when Cyle Larin arrived in January after a goalless first half of the season at Feyenoord. He then scored on his Championship and FA Cup debuts, whereas Azon already has English experience but failed to make a lasting mark during Ipswich’s promotion.

At six foot, the Spaniard is a physical and direct presence, likened in style to Che Adams and Larin. He is not yet a clinical finisher, and development under Eckert at Staplewood could be key.

Kieran McKenna did not unlock that improvement last season. This may not be the signing many supporters crave, but it would not be a disaster if Azon arrives.
