Southampton saw a late move for Charlton Athletic striker Micah Mbick rejected in the final hours of the window, according to Sky Sports News.

The Saints were otherwise quiet on deadline day, with defender Zach Abbott arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest. News of the failed approach emerged mid-way through the 1-1 draw at Birmingham City on Tuesday.

The bid was understood to be £5m plus £2m in add-ons, taking the package to around £7m. Mbick, aged 19, has featured for Nathan Jones’s side this season after a successful spell at Colchester United last term.

Brighton and Hove Albion had a £3.5m offer turned down earlier this year. During his loan at Colchester in League Two, Mbick scored nine goals in 25 games before an injury curtailed his progress.

It proved too late for Southampton to land the forward, and any interest could be revisited in future. For now, they will lean on Cyle Larin and Divin Mubama, with Larin having scored five in five before the trip to St Andrew’s, while Mbick focuses on more minutes at Charlton.
