Southampton swept past Wrexham 5-1 in the Championship, a refreshed side delivering a ruthless away display capped by late goals from Ross Stewart and Finn Azaz.
Tonda Eckert restored Flynn Downes, Kuryu Matsuki and Shea Charles, with Jack Stephens and Cyle Larin starting. According to Sainstmarching.com, Charles was the standout, while Azaz also impressed.
The visitors started fast, Matsuki finishing from close range in the 12th minute after a neat Azaz pass. Downes then steered in a controlled effort from the edge of the area in the 22nd minute after a set-piece broke his way.
Wrexham halved the deficit in the 34th minute after a clear foul by Kieffer Moore on Taylor Harwood-Bellis was ignored, allowing Josh Windass to score.
Larin restored the cushion on the hour, pouncing on a misplaced pass near halfway before driving into the far corner. Stewart made it four from a Welington cross, then Azaz added a deserved fifth late on.
Daniel Peretz was wrong-footed for the hosts’ goal. James Bree’s deliveries troubled Wrexham, Harwood-Bellis produced key clearances, Stephens recovered after an error for the concession, and Ryan Manning was solid before Welington replaced him.
In midfield, Downes returned with purpose and Charles’s energy and interceptions underpinned control. Sam Edozie threatened down the left but his final ball faltered and he made way for Léo Scienza, while Matsuki was lively and Larin led the line well before going off.
